Reds lack of defensive depth exposed

With Carragher having to come off against Bolton our lack of depth at the back was exposed. I like Jack Hobbs, think he's one for the future but didn't fancy having to face Marseille & Manchester United with him at the back.

With Aggers return still up in the air it's fortunate Carragher only bruised his ribs and is expected back next weekend. We're well placed to mount a very serious title challenge, but if having to rely on rookie defenders for any prolonged period, that challenge could fall off the rails.

Fortunately this all makes it easier for Rafa to convince the Yanks of our need for experienced defensive cover and obtaining the services of Kaladze in the January transfer window could go a long way to ensuring the Premiership trophy ends up in Liverpool at the end of the season ;-)

I think Hobbs has lots of potential but he is definitely not ready yet to take over from Hyypia but will in a year or two

He should go out on loan for a while and get some top level experience.
He looks very composed on the ball but experience is really needed if he wants any chance of becoming a first team regular.

Its all good and well trying to romanticise about a youngster making it but some just arent good enough. Sure Hobbs looks alright but try compare him with the likes of Garay who is only 19 and we are rumoured to be interested. There is a massive difference between the two. Hobbs is highly unlikely to ever make it at liverpool.

He's got all the attributes you would want in a defender, strong, good composure, quick, good in the air.
He's just a young lad who given time will probably develop in to a first class defender.

I can't see how we can make pronouncements on Hobbs yet. The fact that the notoriously cautious Rafa has him in the first team at all says he must be a decent enough player. And remember, Carra looked like an awkward accident waiting to happen when he first made the team, and look at him now. Defenders take time to mature, maybe Hobbs can be a great defender too if he gets the chance.

@dummy - i hope we don't sign garay, would prefer someone older like Kaladze

@jessica & michael - very true, just lacks experience

@terence - here's hoping he does get the chance
