Apparently he's meant to be hard as f**k and full of promise, hmmm, well not if you've seen him play against Everton or Ireland (little Kevin Doyle managed to out jump him (6"4') for a headed goal). While he's been criticised for lacking pace, he's faster than Hyypia and Hyypia managed to be one of the best defenders in the world for several years !
He passed his medical today and also his transfer fee & personal terms have already been agreed. Initially I imagine Skrtel will be backup to Agger & Carragher but in the next couple of seasons we just might get to see him replace Carragher if he does get to fulfill his vaunted promise.

If theres one thing Benitez seems to get right its his defenders. The fact he is willing to break the club record for Skrtel should speak volumes about his ability.
I reckon just like with Agger, Benitez has done his homework and scouted him for a long time so we can ignore the odd game or two where he had an off day (everyone gets them)
And it was one bloody good header too ;-)

Benitez knows defenders ?
Remember Pellegrino, Barragan, Kromkamp, Aurelio etc. Those guys didnt exactly make it.
His successes are only Agger and Arbeloa so far
Pellegrino & Aurelio were both free transfers to provide cover. Barragan was also free (17 year old) and we sold him for a couple of million a year later (he didnt want to stay in UK) so that is a success I would say. Kromkamp wasnt the best but we needed cost effective cover.
With Agger & Arbeloa, Benitez knew both of them well both on and off the pitch, he put time in to both of those transfers and I'll bet he has done the same with Skrtel.
I think its very exciting whenever we sign someone new, especially if i dont know who they are (Agger, Garcia etc), so i dont care what any of you say!
I am looking forward to seeing how our new record signing defender turns out.
And I too am looking forward to people finally having a new defender whose name they can spell incorrectly, John Arne Risse has been lonely for far too long.
I also wish Alan Hansen was still playing because a classic-kids'-bedtime-story central defensive partnership of Hansen and Skrtel would really tickle my funny bone, but then again, I am a big eejit...
Oh, and Sami Hyppia.
LOL - Hansen & Skrtel - I like it ;-)
This would make for a great tune for him :-
Teenage Mutant Ninja Skrtel,
Slovak in a Half Shell,
Skrtel Power
LMAO
Martin Skrtel has turned out to be a success. All smile round.
