It's great that LFC has started chasing players for next season, but not so great that top of the list so far is Gareth Barry (£10m bid made). We've got a crowded midfield as it is with Gerrard, Mascherano, Lucas, Alonso and the emerging Plessis (really hope this kid makes it). Unless Alonso is being shipped out this summer, where are we going to fit Barry ?
I hope it's not on the wings as a workmanlike non-winger type (ala Kuyt). The really key positions for us are proper wingers & wingbacks who can take on players with some pace, power and creativity. I yearn for the Liverpool of old when we played arguably the most attractive football around. Maybe I'm being harsh on Barry, but do we really need him ?

i totally agree with that comment. rafa seems to like to haev alonso, mascherano and gerrard in the same team and rightly so but where will barry fit in? then as u mentioned we have plessis and lucas. this is the very thing that upsets players and then u have disharmony. and then u r forced to rotate. i felt that rafa was forced to rotate more than he wanted to this season just to keep some players happy.
i stil think with xabi, javier and gerrard in the same teacm its best to play gerrard on the right cos he is NOT a play maker like he wants to be. its getting to gerrards head and in the last 2 games he played for liverpool he was useless. playing in that postion has made him stop tackling. gerrard is best when he brings the abll forward from midfield. u dont see him going for 1 on 1s anymore. he is not a forward.
If Alonso stays and we get Barry we seriously risk a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Alonso has been crap for a couple of seasons now so would not be too sorry to see him leave.
I hope Rafa gets plenty of funds as we really need at least 3 or 4 top quality players especially in the wide areas.
Rafa's as bad as Houlier, obsessed with collecting midfielders.
I'd say Barry's some sort of replacement for the departing Alonso but I would really like to see us linked with 2 x £15m wingers for the right and left sides (ta-ra Riise and Pennant), and a new left back. Probably aother striker required too when Crouchie goes, a decent player who has been harshly treated I believe.
@Abdul - Welcome to My Anfield :-)
I agree with you that Gerrard would probably be best deployed in a right wing position. That is a 'willing' Gerrard on the right wing would work, but sadly he pouts too much when played 'out of position'.
@Dummy & Terence - It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens with Alonso in the ensuing weeks, and yes we badly need wingers, thankfully Kewell is on his way out at long last.
