How is it that a player at just 25 years of age makes it through to the end of his contract [at Borussia Dortmund] without being a transfer target for anyone significant ? If Philipp Degen was really all that good how come he wasn't a target last summer for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal or Manchester United (never mind the likes of Everton, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur).
Granted he's a very fast attacking player with lots of energy and I remember him being rated highly prior to the last World Cup. But players like that attract attention [lots of] and I suspect that numerous scouts who've watched him play realise that consistency might not be a strong point of his. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we've started 'rebuilding' our squad for next season, but I think Degen might be Voronin #2.

The technical term you are looking for is that many people think he is a bit shit ;-)
Man Utd are chasing Alves and Chelski have spent £16m on a right back... who did we get again ???
The reason his contract ran out is because Liverpool had already sewn up the deal. Dortmund knew this and had refused to play him in the last couple of months....give the lad a break he hasn't even kicked a ball for us yet
Man Utd and Chelsea have lots of money, Liverpool don't. Stop playing Championship manager and get back into the real world.
interesting how you class liverpool apart from everon,spurs etc. I think spurs will break the top 4 next season and liverpool who are by far the weakest of the champions league group will miss out.
He certainly looks good on YouTube, but I think you make a very valid point.
His attributes clearly attract attention, but not even mid level teams bothered to try and sign him in the last couple of seasons.
Still I want give the lad a chance to impress and will reserve judgement on him for a while yet.
so you are saying that we MUST buy a player that was chased by other top clubs????wat about skrtel???is there any club(s) chasing him before we sign him???oh come on..
If Spuds break into the top 4 next season, I'll start believing in the immaculate conception.
Most likely contenders will be Everton or Villa
Why have you got a link to The S*n website!!?
whats the problem with picking up a guy on a free transfer on about 30k a week to replace a former free transfer player that was on three times as much and hardly ever made it out of the physios room????
Some very interesting points raised.
@robbie - i hope you're wrong
@nicholas - i'm well aware they have money and we don't, i'm only saying he's not the most exciting addition to the squad (hope i'm wrong)
@anonymous #2 - liverpool are a lot closer to the 'big 3' than you realise, there was only a small gap at the top
@dummy - agreed and i hope he will turn out to be a good signing
@anonymous #3 - the comparison with Skrtel is very different. Degen has been in the shop window for a few seasons now at a high level but didn't attract any offers (not a good sign).
@anonymous #4 - LOL ;-)
@anonymous #5 - I don't have a link to that site !!! If there is a link (Google localise those text ads for each region) can you take a screenshot and email it to me as that paper is supposed to be on my denied list
Every season Man Utd & Chelskits spend way more money than Liverpool,lets not pretend to be suprised-but they can never buy Liverpools hearts & spirit.We buy 1 player (Torres) for the money they spend on benchwarmers & he blows the premiership to pieces. If Liverpool ever had the open chequebook of these other clubs they would finish undefeated with daylight 2nd. Lets get 2 more big names & hand out hankies to the opposition supporters as the most successful team in England adds to its silverware next season.
How many free transfer players have we signed that have been a success? Kewell, Aurelio, Voronin....
Exactly Zero. High profile or not it hasnt mattered but it does suggest that Deggen will have to buck a trend if he is to be a success at Anfield.
More importantly I wish Hicks would just f*ck off
Do you sign a player only when being chased by the Chavs & the mancs. That is a very baseless analysis, Paul. Why, for once, should the Mancs worry about the players we are chasing? Unless you tell me the Chavs ever chased Skirtel, Masch, Agger, Garcia (who kept demolishing them in the UCL) etc, etc
Marcus babel was a wicked free signing.
@anonymous #9 - The point I'm getting at is that plenty of clubs were well aware that he had potential a couple of years ago but no one bothered to try and sign him after having him scouted.
I don't think that bodes well, therefore I'm not overly excited about this signing.
Markus Babbell I stand corrected but thats only one of how many that was a relitive success.
babbel was not free.
im sure he cost you.
wasn't babbels fee around the 7-10 million mark?
an open cheque book isnt holding Liverpool back, its the donkey you'v got in charge, sure hes done something in Europe but hes failed to show any signs of being able to manage a squad over the cours of an entire campagin.
Anyway, maybe Abramovich will fuck off this summer, then youl be up to third!
Nah, Babbel was a free transfer also, came from Bayern Munich at age 28.
Hopefully we'll get lucky with Deggen and he'll turn out to be a good freebie too ;-)
