Possible implications of the Olympics for Liverpool

I expect an even tighter title race next season and wonder how much of an effect the Olympics will have on the shape of the Premiership. The games are staged between 8th - 24th August with training camps starting 2 weeks before that. I don't know how many [if any] players from the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal & Manchester United will be at the Olympics.
But for Liverpool, Lucas Leiva is now the second player (after Mascherano) to announce his intention to play, which leaves us a little light in central midfield. The signing of Gareth Barry seems a foregone conclusion and I wonder if that means Rafa will try hold on to Alonso until the end of the transfer window but maybe Alonso will have other ideas. All it would then take is an injury to one of our remaining midfielders and we risk gifting a slight edge to our title rivals.

At least Gerrard and Barry will not have any Euro 2008 hangovers to worry about so they should be both fit. Its only for a few games and we should be ok. But yeah its inconvenient for us.

i don't think it's gonna be that big a deal - a much bigger problem is whether we can afford enough quality signings to make a proper title challenge next season

There shouldnt be a problem, we will have gerrard, barry/alonso and damien plessis, he has down well in the games he has played....we should worry about getting some quality fullbacks!!!

I cant see Alonso sticking around if we sign Barry but Plessis should be able to do a job for us if needs be.
Wingers and wingbacks are on my most wanted wishlist and if we can get those then i think our title challenge will work out just fine ;-)

I was certainly impressed with Plessis when he played against Arsenal, and would like to think he can handle a game or two if needs be in August.
As for Alonso, I think he's as good as gone, he's not half the player he once was so it shouldn't be a big loss for us.
