I'm glad the whole Gareth Barry debacle is seemingly over now. Like everyone else, I've spent weeks watching events unfold, secretly sick at the sheer ransom which Aston Villa were trying to hold us to.
If he is meant to be at Liverpool, then I really hope he holds out on signing another contract as next summer he will be far more reasonably priced and O'Neill can shove his £18 million where the sun don't shine.
Which leaves us with Alonso, undoubted quality, awesome in his first couple of seasons. But for the last 2 seasons, his form has dropped considerably and he looks disinterested, which makes me wonder if we can depend on him. Should Alonso find his form of old then I won't be too bothered about missing out on Barry this time round. Time will tell.

It could be a blessing in disguise if Alonso continues to play poorly because it'll then give Lucas and Plessis more chances to impress and develop, with Lucas probably already good enough to be a regular starter. Forget about central midfield, we badly need wingers and I've got serious doubts about Degen and hope Rafa doesn't let Finnan leave.
I am relieved that Benitez wasnt prepared to cough up £18m for Barry and I hope that ONeill ends up with egg on his face if Barry walks out next season for half his current valuation. In fact if ONeill really fancies Barry that much then why not offer him a new contract worthy of his bullshit valuation.
Lucas is definitely good enough to keep both Alonso and Barry out of the team. We dont really need more holding midfielders, just wingers please :-)
All you whinging scousers have been bleating all summer about how much better than Barry Alonso is, now the reality of life without Barry is starting to dawn you're starting to admit what the rest of the country has known all along, Alonso is nowhere near the player he was, and in the last two years Barry has got better and better. He might still end up at Anfield, but whatever happens, Liverpool football club, its manager and its fans have shown the world what a clueless, classless bunch of self obsessed nobs you really are.
anonymous - what a cock you are...
I did mention classless didn't I?
Speak to a fan of any club except Liverpool and get to grips with the public perception of your club. You'd be in for a shock were you not so myopic and self obsessed.
Why can't you Liverpool-fans start to realise all the players that you have and start using all those plyers that you borrow to buy?
Liverpool are in dept and soon or later will be i big trouble as thing goes... Look at my club Aston Villa... That's the way a club should be driven.
We Aston Villa-fans is looking forward to this season and that MON is still running the management with cleverness in the future...
So... all I have to say.... UP THE VILLA... SHIT THE 'POOL
According to the BBC the deal is still on so up yours Villa fans :-)

Villa will always be small, thats why they have small minded fans. Would they get 51,000 turning up for a pre season friendly if Villa were playing at Hertha Berlin? Or a bigger turnout for a pre season friendly than the La Liga games for Villareal. No! they probably wouldnt have even heard of Villa.
It is not about being BIG or SMAll- playground stuff - well I guess it is the school holidays.
I find it hard to believe experienced businessmen can "miss" deadlines by 15mins (or was it 20 mins ?). Seems like a strategy to save face in Liverpool as do the reports in the press claiming the deal is not really dead. Think facts have to be faced - Liverpool saw Keane as the priority and now, given the club's indebtedness and interest repayments, they cannot buy until they have off-loaded players including some they would prefer to keep. Hicks and Gillett are in it for the money, not the football
I hear plenty of neutrals including my Everton mates agreeing that Alonso is class and a league above Barry. Just look at his 3 touches and slide ball through to the left wing last night. You'd never see Barry play with such subtlty. I'd take him cos of his left foot, but we don't need Barry.
mmm well umm aston villa fans telling us how to run a club ahhaha
funny umm wat exactly did u run last season, and have u even ever qualified for the championes league
liverpudlians have tasted glory and we no alot more than u (mr anonymous) about our own club
barry is class, he is better than alonso no doubting that
alonso is a strong player with the potential to prove his worth
no offense but im not a stuk up nob i happen just to love football,
theres no need to get jealous ov us villa ahhaa jks
What about Barry's first touch through ball that played Gerrard in for his goal for England against the US? I think that link up play might be the reason both Benitez and Gerrard are desperate to see Barry at Anfield next season.
@dummy & @jessica - definitely have to agree with you both about Lucas, sheer class, really hope he makes it.
@loseit - ;-)
@slick - every single team has it's shall we say 'eccentric' fans and LFC is no different, if another teams fans want to criticise LFC, i'll not lose too much sleep over it
Ah sure i suppose criticism and jealousy go hand in hand i happen to think that both Alonso and Barry are very good players in their own right and its fair to say that Alonso has underperformed for us this last two seasons i just feel that Barry is a more versatile player that would offer more options than Alonso because of his ability to play in several positions ie. Lm LfB Cm Cdm and also as they say Keane is the perfect foil for Torres then maybe Barry would be the perfect foil for Gerrard and help the link up play between the midfield and forwards. Just my opinion
I think it's fair to say alonso is alot better than barry. just take a look at what he did for spain in the euro's. he was voted MOTM in one match and played a blinder. he is undoubtedly the best passer of a ball in the Premiership and the Premiership is where he should stay. also with the likes of lucas, mascherano and of course gerrard we don't need any more midfielders. wingers are what we need. bring david silva in!!! YNWA
LFC 4 LIFE
we could of got david villa if we hadn't blown £20m on Keane. just have to see if it pays off! YNWA
LFC 4 LIFE (BIG UP THE DIC!!!)
