There was some real stand out moments in the match against Lazio. It's all good and well for fans to make their feelings known and with Alonso there can be no doubt they want him to stay. His name was chanted loudly and often, his every touch, pass, free kick and corner was applauded. Which is fair enough.
But then there was some truly shameful behaviour with some people chanting "you can stick Gareth Barry up your a**e". WTF ? It's not like Barry has done anything wrong, it's Aston Villa who are trying to rob us blind with their valuation. What happens if we do sign him, are those same fans going to boo his every touch ?

How can you leave out the crap from our 'fans' booing Voronin. Totally uacceptable to boo a current player. Wonder if these same idiots cheered when we scored.
I was at the game and on the Kop, and I'm from Liverpool (before I get criticised for being an OOT!!), and I think there was some overreaction to the chant about Barry. It was banter plain and simple, and more a reflection on the Kop's fondness of Alonso than indignation aimed at Barry. It was truly inspiring the support Alonso received, and while the Barry chant maybe went on too long, there were no people booing it for the first 10 minutes after it started.
As for Voronin being booed, I think that was to the minimum, and I think his putting his finger to his mouth to shush the booers was more disrespectful. He's hardly Henry is he? He ought to look at Torres and get his head down and work hard, not revel in a moment's glory (which ironically came about through his giving the ball away dismally - hmmm). - David, Liverpool
I completely agree. The fan's loyalty to Alonso is commendable/nice, but he has obvious weaknesses (tackling and mobility) that are minimum requirements for premiership midfielders. Barry seems to be the more complete player (and is excellent at set-pieces), so what if doesn't score from within his own half!
In Rafa we trust....
The booing for Voronin is wrong full stop, and what the hell do you mean look at Torres?? Torres is a totally different beast to Voronin, could say that about every striker, well Torres is doing it? Voronin does try very hard and he looks a player to be very low on confidence, booing him is not going to help. and as a man he has every right to tell us to shut the **** up never mind hold his finger to his lips. Barry I do not care about he's not in a red strip end of.
It never makes sense to boo a current player. Does anyone think that it helps him or the team? As long as he is a member of the squad we should hope that he does as well as possible. This isn't the Bronx, NY.
I found the incessant chanting of Alonso's name eventually became ridiculous and embarrassing. The final straw was the anti-Barry chant.
To some it obviously was a prank, and to others it was shameful. I suggest that anyone who thought it funny or innocuous is guilty of poor judgement at best. At worst they are immature, stupid and damaging the Club's good name.
For some reason the Kop think that THEY ARE the Club. Well they're not. And sometimes they are plain embarrassing.
Plus on most match days they are outsung by the Visitors anyway.
I believe I speak for the majority of fans when I say that ALL SUPPORTERS should remember Liverpool's good name and supposed humour. I hope last night was a one-off and we can get back to the football.
Booing one of our players is rarely if ever acceptable.
Cut it out.
To be honest, I didn't notice the Voronin booing. I thought I heard a couple of little things but wasn't sure.
I should've been paying more attention I guess but was more distracted by the Alonso & Barry saga. I agree that it's unacceptable to boo current players and not terribly smart should he end up staying another season I doubt he'll be over motivated to perform :-(
Voronin has shown glimpses of talent, especially in pre-season last year but since then he looks disinterested so a move could be good for him and us.
Ngog is looking pretty good so far, we're keeping Kuyt and Nemeth should be ready to make the step up so we've plenty of strikers to backup Torres & Keane.
Hmm. To Mr Anonymous !
The Kop are the club actually mate.
As are the other 43,000 supporters in the ground. The players nor the Management are the club, the Fans are.
If you disagree, look back ten years. The Kop was there and the rest of the crowd. The Players and Management were not. In ten years time from now the same will be true.
I suggest a reassesment of your opinion and admit the fans.... Including the Kop ARE THE CLUB.
On Vorinin, he's pants... On Barry who cares, If he signs he signs.... If he doesnt he doesnt. He wont win us the leagure will he !
On the booing. You pays your money you can shout what you want! But get behind the team when it matters!!!!!!
To Chris,
Firstly The Kop arn't THE club, we are just mearly the heart and soul of the club.. Without us the club would still go on and thus do with us. Without the players and management there would be no club.
Yes we do pay our money to watch the game, but to be disrespectuful to players well, can you really call yourself a true Liverpool fan if thats how you treat your team-mates.
Future players that the manager will look to sign may be un-attracted by this booing and think, if i don't play well will they boo me also?
Truely awful behaviour.
@ Hughesy, what Alonso are you talking about mate?
Tackling and mobility being one of Alonso's weaknesses? Do some research. Alonso makes more complete tackles than 95% of the other Premier League midfielders.
He also frequently covers more distance than any player on the pitch (Kilometres. Only Crouch used to outrun Alonso when they both played.
So, I think you should re-evaluate your opinion and look into the facts. Alonso's weakness lies in his goals and assists. But that's a small weakness, and why only Barry is capable of replacing him. He provides goals and assists far more regularly than Xabi.
If we sold Alonso to Arsenal it would be one of the worst pieces of business in Premier League history.
I pray we can keep both, damn yanks.
Alonso is truly an LFC legend, form is temporary, class is permanent.
Barry is nowhere near as good as Alonso. It seems like Alonso fell out of favour with Rafa which is unfortunate and also the only reason why he's trying to sell him.
Voronin is a complete waster, he has had a full season to impress and has failed miserably. I don't believe in supporting the players no matter what. If they consistently play shite then it's time for them to go. We the fans are the ones who pay their enormous wages, we the fans deserve something in return.
Firstly whats wrong with being an out of towner? I am and i still go to games maybe not as many as someone who lives down the road, but the club work hard on their world wide fan base and the supporters are proud of it yet if you want an opinion then it doesnt count unless your from the city what a load of bull s***. My view as a supporter should count as much as the next liverool supporter
Secondly how can anyone say Voronin is a waster or he is c**p? Last Season was his first and he rarely played at that, he also suffered with a few injuries. hardly ideal preparation in trying to adjust to a new league, style of play and language is it? The guy was a star in Germany and scored plenty of goals. Imagine if Arsenal fans judged Henry or Adebyor on their first seasons, give the guy a break and let him prove himself. i was glad he put his finger to his mouth, i would do the exact same if fans booed me. Why should he show respect to people who show none to him. Respect isnt just given its earned and those fans booing him do not deserve it. Now he needs to earn our respect too but we also need to give him a chance.
It annoys me when some people are so short sighted and fickle. Football fans are the worst for it, but never thought id see it from Liverpool fans. Why boo a guy who has done nothing wrong?
To Chris. I've been going to the match for 30 odd years and I thin you are talking arrogant shite. The Kop (or the rest of the ground) are not the club. Most of the fans are knob-head misfits anyway if you have a good look. The Kop was there 10 years ago but more than likely they were different knob-heads.
When I used to stand on the Anny Rd we would laugh and take the piss out of the Kopites because they were all ugly misfits (in general, not all). Liverpool fans are now not much better than anyone else's.
@The comment above,
I agree totally mate, there is so much arrogance about a lot of the Anfield crowd these days. Most are obsessed with image and looking the part, rather than playing the part and being a cog in the machine, which is where we would be valuable.
As for Chris, who said people pay their money so they have a right to boo...show some goddamn support you moron. Really though, what has Voronin done that is so bad? Okay, he lacks the abilities of Torres, but he's a 4th choice striker, he's never complained about the manager or being rotated, he comes on, he works hard and he does score some goals. I wish the boo boys would just get lost and go support Man City or something.
I'm guessing the same boo boys who go after Voronin are the same 'fans' who boo the team when we're drawing. Pathetic, it really is.
@ st. chris (above)
Not sure where you get these really useful and interesting stats from, but my OPINION is that Alonso’s weaknesses are tackling and mobility, while his strengths are ball retention and creativity, but (by your own admission) he hasn’t even been doing the latter so I can understand why he has slipped down the pecking order at Anfield… And it’s the first time I’ve ever heard someone describe Crouchie as mobile. This term is usually synonymous with pace/speed, but I understand you assign a different meaning to it – fair enough.
Out of interest where does Mascherano and Gerrard feature in the Premiership complete tackles charts? Also top 5%?…
Booing a red is bad enough, but at a preseason match… pathetic. No club can accommodate 4 world class strikers in their squad (egos etc), so we have to accept that not all of ours are going to be of Torres' standard.
Some of our so called supporters need to learn/remeber that players come and go. It is the club and the 11 players on the field with Liverbird upon their chest, which you support.
You'll Never Walk Alone
