Different perspectives on Pennants situation

Rafa says he doesn't intend to freeze him out and may also look to extend his contract. It sounds like a ruse to avoid losing money which is fair enough, as he is in the last year of his contract. We signed him for £6.7 million and it would be nice to try and recoup some of that.

I like Pennant when he's on form, but it's clear that he's fallen down the pecking order. Rather than playing him in the Carling Cup games, why not take the opportunity to further blood El Zhar who looks an exciting prospect. Best to cut our losses with Pennant and let him go on the cheap instead of paying a huge salary to someone who's rotting away in the reserves.

Stoke & Birmingham City failed to agree personal terms with Pennant, seems he would prefer to sit out his contract until a better offer comes along. I'm not sure I'd want to see LFC exercising their option to extend his contract another year, only for him to repeat his refusal to leave again next summer.

I'd like for Pennant to stay.

If Pennant is content with limited play time coming off the bench, by all means keep him. Both Pennant and Bennayoun could be starting for other EPL clubs, and we could really use them coming in late to change the pace of a game.

If LFC wants to compete for league titles, we need to have quality on the field and on the bench. Pennant is not quite good enough to be starting for a top 4 club, but he's a more than capable sub.

I agree that Pennant is a more than capable sub. Like I said I like the guy, especially when he's on form.

But I look at the likes of Riera, Babel, Benayoun and Kuyt and realise that Pennant is behind all of them in the pecking order.

Rafa has said he's going to look at playing him in the Carling Cup, but if that's all he's going to be used for, I'd rather that playing time were devoted to developing young talent who might have a future with LFC.

But when looking at the likes of Riera, Babel, Benayoun, and Kuyt, I'm only seeing one true winger--Reira.
Rafa clearly knows more than I do, but Babel and Kuyt are strikers, not wingers. And Benayoun is an attacking midfielder.

We have very few true wingers on our team, but Pennant is one of them.

That's certainly very true, but if Rafa doesn't rate him above those guys, then there's not a whole we can do about it unfortunately :-(
