The writing had been on the wall for quite a while now, as Finnan had clearly been out of favour with Rafa. I'd hoped beyond hope that he would stay with us, but alas that's not to be. The really surprising thing though, is that he is signing for Espanyol. I'd figured another Premiership club would win his signature instead.
He has been a fantastic servant to our club over the last few years, very underrated despite being one of our most consistent performers. It's sad that he goes without having had the chance to say goodbye at Anfield. I can't help but feel we're losing one of our best players and I hope we don't end up regretting it.

He should do very well over there - the pace of the game is much slower than here. He was definitely one of the best right backs in the Premier League. Wonder what Benitez was thinking letting him go ?
What a shame, he was an excellent player for us. His contribution to us was subtle yet completely vital. Undoubtably our best right back ever.
Stevie Finnan has been great for us and its a real shame to see him go but I think Arbeloa has earned his place with some good performances in much the same manner. Finnan deserves to be playing regularly somewhere so good luck to him. I'd probably move to Barcelona if I was given the opportunity too, certainly over Birmingham or Newcastle ;)

@brian - he could be better but if he's out injured, i'd much rather see Stephen Darby given a chance instead of Degen.
He could be better true, but he ain't muck. With you on Stephen Darby. I thought Anderson could have been given a chance with our lack of wingers too.
Anderson would have been nice but I think El Zhar is going to be the one to profit from our lack of wingmen. He looks a decent player too.
Darby would definitely be better than Degen. Arbeloa is pretty good at times but Finnan was way more consistent and solid at the back.
Mind sharing why do you guys prefer Darby over Degen? Is it professionally or personally? I've never seen both of the players but I assume you have?
I'm gutted that one of our best players was allowed to leave. Finnan has been a very reliable player for us over the years. Arbeloa has his moments but is nowhere near as good. Degen doesn't even know how to defend, only attack.
@roger - yeah i like the look of El Zhar, hope he gets lots more chances to impress
@speirs - there's definitely nothing personal at all about it. Degen will be the first to admit that his defending is suspect to say the least and that attacking is his thing. Darby looks a decent prospect who can defend and isn't afraid to drive forward. Plus I'm dying to see another youth player make the breakthrough ;-)
El Zhar is fast and can bea a player but cant finish to save his life so whats the point. Some of the chances hes had thisseason im sure id have scored
