Nothing wrong with LFCs trademark application

The latest scheme of Hicks & Gillet is to try and trademark the Liver bird logo which resides on the clubs crest. Not the most popular move in the eyes of most Liverpool fans, perhaps because of misrepresentation/misunderstanding of the facts by various media outlets.

Is it really all that unreasonable for them to trademark it under certain circumstances ? For example, if it's limited to 'their own' version of the image and it's usage in certain contexts (LFC or Liverpool FC related merchandising), then it makes reasonable business sense to do so.

The Liver bird is a symbol of Liverpool city and many versions of the image are used in many different contexts, LFC can never lay claim to those versions or any derivatives created. Truth be told, I'm more curious as to whether they'll heap the £450 cost onto their existing loan.

Been reading loads of articles about this and they're making it out to be some sort of scandal. The liverpool city council officials are dumb to be thinking LFC will own the liverbird. They clearly don't understand anything about trademarks. An equivalent of this would be all the fruit companies going ballistic because Apple Computer decided to register their apple logo. It makes no difference to anyone.

I was just about to ask why was it so silent for so long in this blog :)..

Well cheers mate, G&H are not doing that to every thing moving in Liverpool. I'll tell you what, if given a chance, those f****ers will try doing that even to every supporter.

@dummy - funnily enough, I think Apple Computer were sued by the Beatles music company (they also used a similar looking apple logo) for infringing on their use of the logo in music related products (or something to that effect, my memory is somewhat hazy on the details)

@abhiram - sorry about that, it was primarily due to the trials and tribulations of newly married life and moving apartments....
