For someone so young and inexperienced, last season Lucas showed many glimpses of his talent with excellent composure against even the bigger teams. His simple style of play involved giving the team options through intelligent passing and movement.
Despite not really impressing so far this season, there's undoubted potential there. It takes times for all players to mature and even then they still go through rough patches (same for Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso).
Unfortunately Gerrard clattered into the kid yesterday on a frosted training ground pitch, which left him grasping his shoulder in agony. There's still no word on how long he'll be out for. Which is a shame as he makes a more than credible 4th choice midfielder [for the time being]. Who knows, maybe in another year or two, we'll all be drooling over his performances.

Its unfair just how much criticism Lucas Leiva has been receiving. Pundits turn a blind eye to Alonso or Mascherano when they have a bad day but then slate Lucas when he does. Fabregas is probably the exception to the rule that midfielders take a few years to develop their talents. I hope Lucas Leiva does develop into a consistent first teamer for Liverpool, he may be a simple player but he is a very effective one when playing well.
I just dont see any potential with Lucas. He looks a very very ordinary player who does nothing special. Squad filler material thats all.
Not seen this news. Feel sorry for the lad. Hope he gets well soon. I know he has the potential and he'll be one of shining stars in the near future. If he is sold and he goes underutilized by us, it'll be just another club's gain. He needs confidence and he'll come good.
@jessica - with our crowded midfield, it'll be tough for any youngsters to cement a first team place.
@abhiram - only seen it in the Telegraph today, surprised no other newspapers etc are picking up on it.
Lucas might have the ability and potential to be a great player but he wont get enough necessary playing experience at Liverpool. A loan move next season would be good for him otherwise he will just fade into obscurity.
Lucas has has a terrible season so far, maybe loan him out for the time being, but he should never be in the first team, as at the moment he is no where near good enough
Lucas just doesn't do anything exceptional. He reminds me of Ray Wilkins who was nicknamed the crab because he always passed sideways. Lucas has more to his repertoire, he passes backwards!!
Spearing is a far better prospect but Rafa is a bit like Wenger in that he likes to give the foreign lads a chance before the homegrown. I mean Ngog?? I ask you.
Lucas is average - at best. Every time he plays he gives nothing to the team - cant pass, run, shoot, tackle, head or take people on. He reminds me of leonhardsen or kozma or danny murphy - not good enough at all!
Spearing a better prospect than Lucas? Hahaha. Obviously written by someone who either has seen neither play or is just clueless.
Lucas is pathetic and brings down the teams form whenever he plays. I wish Gerrard had broken is arm so he would be out for longer.
how on earth can anyone say that lucas is any good. he doesn't deserve to tie up gerrards boots. what has he done sine he arrived....score a goal against havant & waterloo & one in the league cup. GREAT PLAYER! how on earth are we going to stop Real Madrid from taking him?
I laugh reading people say he has potential. I have never seen him do anything half special and can not understand people saying he is going to be really good in the future. Play him in the reserves for a long spell and see what he can do there, same as Ngog. The carling cup game against Tottenham was a great example of him doing nothing. Jermaine Pennant is a better player them him, but Rafa never plays Pennant. Like the last guy said how are we going to stop Real Madrid from stealing him.
I feel sorry for the lad getting so much stick, but lets be honest he's got very little ability. if he was available for free would man u, chelsea or arsenal be interested?? i cringe every time he gets the ball, i dont see a single redeeming quality.
Lucas is a player who has this far in the season not played any good games for Liverpool. I think he is a disgrace in the Liverpool shirt. He is slow, does not understand the game, cannot pass properly and is a coward. I sincerely hope that (unless rafa wants to sell him in january) he is sidelined for months with the injury from Gerrards tackle.
I get the impression that the people who are leaving anonymous comments have only started supporting Liverpool this season. Which explains why they wouldn't have seen Lucas play last season when he did show plenty of ability. So what if he hasn't played well in the few games he has been given this season. That doesn't make him a bad player. He looks like a player lacking in confidence at the moment. He needs to get some games under his belt and a loan move would be ideal for him.
It breaks my heart to see a young english midfielder in danny guthrie go to newcastle and we get a pretty average south american. I dont think he's the worst player in the world by a long shot, anyone who plays in the top flight of english football deserves a big pat on the back. I definately would
have Stephen Warnock and Danny Guthrie over Lucas and Aurelio though yes, and they're both english and both young. Enough said.
Dear Dummy,
I have supported Liverpool since 1975 and have have during those years - with a few exceptions- never seen a player as overpraised as Lucas. He might be a wonderful player in another league than the Premier League. However, my point is that he is simply not good enough for Liverpool. This season he has been a catastrophe - the game against Tottenham in the League Cup was the worst midfield performance I have ever seen a Liverpool team play. Liverpool were simply overrun. Last season he did play better - but I have never seen him play better than "avarerage" - he has never, as far as I have seen, had a brilliant game for Liverpool. He has had enough chances to prove that he can be more than that, but never performed. I stick to what I said and will also add that he in addition to being a slow and cowardly player he is also physically weak.
I also think it is clear that the other players on the team does not believe in him - once he has the ball the runs stop - as if they knew that he would not be able to pass them the ball anyway.
I honestly believe that they should sell Leiva while they can get some money for him and then buy something better. It is a pity - I had quite high hopes for him.
It seems stupid that Rafa would sell a player like Danny Guthrie who is way better then Lucas ever will be. I also think that as stubborn as Rafa is he will recognise that Lucas is just not good enough and get rid of Lucas next summer. The real problem though is that Rafa is not giving the local youth players enough of a chance. This is probably because of his ego because he cant take any credit for the development of the local lads but he can take credit whenever he buys a good player.
I cringe everytime I see Leiva next to the fourth official holding up someone's number.
The sensation would still occur if we were five down.
I am sure I speak for the majority (even the slight under-majority).
Its hardly surprising at this reaction towards Lucas. He's not done so bad to warrant such reactions. I don't think you did the same last year when he was playing well and he'd forced Alonso on the bench. Alonso was playing badly then. But he did not receive such criticism, did he?
I have high hopes on Lucas. I feel he'll come good. I have trust in Rafa. Rafa trusts Lucas and thats enuf for me.
Lucas should go back to Brazil and pick Banannas cause thats all he is good for...the player is a joke....he wouldnt even make a sunday league pub side.,...get a grip people....the chap is shit!!!
