Happy news for the cult of Skrtel

Agger and Hyypia have been taking turns to partner Carragher over the last couple of months while Skrtel has been out injured. I had hoped Agger would make the most of Skrtels absence to cement his place in the side and earn a new contract. Sadly that didn't happen.

Skrtel has started training again, and will probably [sensibly] be eased back into the side (forget about him making the Arsenal game). Skrtel and Agger remain our 2 best defenders (when on form) and hopefully represent the future of our central defence.

For now though, it appears that Skrtel & Agger are merely competing with each other for the right to play alongside Carragher. If Skrtel does get the nod ahead of Agger, hopefully Agger will get a shot at left back so he can find some consistent form and earn a new contract.

Now all we need is similar news about Torres ;-)

Brilliant news, hope he at least makes the bench against Arsenal. Dying to see him play again.

Really hope Skrtel doesn't do an Agger and lose his form after being out injured for so long. Would love to see them both play together but it'll probably be next season before that starts to happen.

Why hasn't Agger been given the chance at left back? He's the only central defender of ours that actually likes getting forward with the ball & he's got a great left foot!.......He's got as much pace as Aurelio, Dossena or Risse
ever had and I'm sure could do as good a job as any of those three.

Its great to have Skrtel back he makes a better partner with Carra than Hyypia or Agger do.

@roger - should make for a happy new year with both of them back...

@dummy - you're probably right about it being next season before we get to see them together...

Agger for left back seems a much better idea than having Dossena in there.

teenage mutant martin skrtel! hero in a red shirt!

great to hear hes back in full training :)

gotta echo the views of the others here, dossena is a liability and has been responsible for some unnecessary goals. agger should take his berth whilst aurelios out.

An even better solution would be to play Agger, Skrtel, Carragher in a back 3 as part of a 3-5-2 formation when Torres returns. We could clean up with that kind of setup.

@robbie - sounds like a dream formation, would love to see it against the bigger teams, but doubt it...

@robbie and Paul Heron: actually, i would like to see it against the smaller teams we are having trouble beating at Anfield...

In my opinion i don't think Carragher should be playing at centre back. I feel he is better suited on the right and that Agger and Skrtel should be the centre back pairing for the next few years. I am a little tired of Carragher's own goals as well, but i must admit you can not fault his committment or determination. Hyppia can be the back up centre back if Agger or Srktel are injured. I am not sure why Agger is not playing much lately but suspect it is another one of Rafa's stubborn decisions to punish him for something he has done. Lets just hope he does sign the new contract as i don't want him to leave.

@scott d - i hate the way Rafa does that kind of thing :-(

@Paul : a positive blog for a change ;)

I'd like to see Agger and Skrtel partner full time. I am as a big fan of Carra as the next red but he has bottled games recently potentially cost us crucial games(Spurs and Hull) Perhaps through the weakness of Dossena. Whatever the underlying causes he is not handling the pressure very well and is reminiscent of early in his career. The best solution is to stick him on the right and Arbeloa on the left until Aurelio comes back. Even insua looks solid and looks better than Dossena who should not be risked any more. Rafa has to come under question for selling Mr consistent steve finnan and he hasnt improved on riise. He is responsible for this.

Sami Hyypia is a legend but his slowness is a factor in us not winning games. Compare the difference when agger plays. Come on back Skrtel.

I do prefer having something positive to blog about but alas that doesn't always happen with LFC ;-)

Play all 3 magnificos - Carra, Skrtel and Agger with Carra as sweeper, Skrtel at centre back and Agger at Left back since he loves to go up north too. What say you guys?
