Testimonial for Sami Hyypia

Well the last game of what has been an exciting season is coming up this Sunday. After that the withdrawal symptoms will kick in. But enough of that and onto far more important concerns.

You see, this is also the last competitive game for Sami Hyypia, and considering the lack of an announcement regarding an official testimonial for him. We can take it as red that this doubles a psuedo testimonial match.

Hopefully our benevolent captain will relinguish his armband so Hyypia can once again lead the reds out for one last time at Anfield. No doubt the legendary Sami Hyypia will get an amazing reception from the Anfield faithful.

Its really disappointing that they havent announced a testimonial yet. If anyone really deserves one, its our Sami. I love that the club has been making multiple statements praising him for his services but I really hope they give him an official testimonial.

Sami is one of the greats in the modern game. 10 years of quality service for one team. Admirable stuff. Would love to see him score and then get taken off with minutes remaining so he can be treated to a mega standing ovation. YNWA Sami

I said it all before. Sami is the epitome of class and what he has done for LFC is more than deserving of a testimonial. Hicks + Gillett should ensure he gets one.

I am so sorry to see him go, what a rock solid professional an absolute joy to watch. It would great to see him with the Captains armband in the final game and I hope the fans let him know how much he will be missed. Farewell Sami and good luck.

@Robbie + @Zoran - he definitely deserves it and I hope something will be announced but time is fast running out, so I'm looking on this match against Spurs as being his last appearance. It'll be kinda sad though.

@Bruce SA RED - I doubt there'll be a single fan in the stadium who doesn't voice their appreciation for the lad :-)

Being an American, I'm not exactly sure how these testimonial matches work. Is it common for someone like Hyypia to get a testimonial when you are transferring to another team? I would have thought it would be more fitting upon retirement from the sport.

I hope this Sunday is a wonderful day for your last game of the season and that the withdrawal symptoms don't kick in too soon or too severe! Enjoy! ( Go Sami! )

@Brink - it's more a length of service thing and at the end of someone's career. Sami is 35 now which for most footballers would be a retirement age. But for Sami he wants to keep going for another couple of years. It's just because he has been with Liverpool for so long and played so well for us that I think most of us would love to see him getting one now while still an LFC player.

@Marcy - I guess we'll all have to find something to do to avoid the withdrawal symptoms becoming too severe over the summer.

Paul - I get that someone who has served the club for as long as Sami is deserving of a testimonial, but it seems to me that it would be a better fit to have one in 2 years, after he officially retires, and back at Anfield.

Sami, from the Guardian: "I am sadder for the fans that Liverpool haven't won the Premier League than for myself. I will keep my fingers crossed that the fans get what they deserve."
Uncommon class. Every bit a legend.

This is the first time I've accessed this site, having just returned from holiday and being desperate not to miss any proposed testimonial for Sami I googled so here I am! But from what I read nothing is planned for this football legend, forget Liverpool for a second, the guy is sheer class! I cannot think of any contentious behaviour throughout his career, a true role model and someone England's captain could undoubtedly learn a few things from!
I'm still working on convincing my wife that our (unconceived (I think?))first born will be called Sami whether a boy or a girl, I'd settle for naming the dog but that wouldn't be fitting enough for such a hero.
