Dream partnership of Mascherano and Alonso

It's no secret that Mascherano and Alonso are both awesome world class players. However, over the last couple of seasons, it was very rare to find them both on form at the same time.

During 07/08, it was Mascherano who lorded over our midfield, while Alonso wasn't on top form. During 08/09, it was Alonso who was masterful in midfield, with Mascherano being uncharacteristically inconsistent.

This season will be their 3rd full season together, hopefully it'll be 3rd time lucky for them and we get to see them synchronise their form. How cool would it be to have a full season where they're both on top form ?

Forget all the media crap about either of these players leaving Liverpool this summer. It ain't going happen. Benitez has made it clear that they're not for sale and both players are fully commited to Liverpool.

I have long believed we got the best midfield in the world and if Mascher + Alonso can pull off a combined season of brilliance then it could prove the biggest factor in us winning number 19.

Mascher was just tired last year after the Olympics. He wont have anything to knacker him out this summer. I know Alonso is going to south africa but Xavi & Iniesta will play ahead of him. What does this mean for us ? Both players will be fresh and fit for the coming season :-)

It will be great seeing them dominate matches but a very real problem exists. Injuries happen every year. We need quality cover and I dont believe Lucas fits that category. Spearing has potential but we could do with someone who has more experience like Gareth Barry. That is just as important if we want to win the league.

If all you guys think that a full blown international like Barry was being brought on as a back-up CM or second 2hoice CM, you guys are wrong. This would again be a Keane saga in the making. Why isn't an England international playing? Rafa is very bad in transfer market! I think you get the drift.

All teams have youngsters as back-up. We have Lucas, Plessis and Spearing. Barcelona have Busquets (who is 20). Chelsea have Mikel. Etc

In my opinion, if Barry had come to Liverpool, he'd played in LM or LB for us and at CM only if Masch or Alonso were rested or injured.

We are very strong in the CM. We don't need additions to it now. Lucas will improve. I really liked the way he shaped up at the end of the season. He'll come good.

Abhiram I agree with almost everything you say and feel compelled to point some things about our youngsters. Spearing is the best of them and should be first choice for CM backup. I have doubts about Lucas but he could come good and deserves one last chance. Plessis is the other you mention, his first game against Arsenal was very good but as the reserve manager pointed out Plessis has a very bad mentality and is not what we should be counting on for backup if we want to win league.

@Larry - yeah I'm getting pretty bored of all the media 'reports' about Alonso possibly leaving. I now just skip those articles.

@The kopite - Barry's off to Man City now ;-)

@Abhiram & @Raj - centre of midfield is one area we're well stocked in, plus Lucas and Spearing can do a job for us there.
