Arbeloa's £3.5m transfer to Real Madrid is almost complete, and the agent for Dossena has also claimed that LFC has accepted a £4.3m bid from Napoli. Consider the first team defenders we'll be left with after that (Johnson, Insua, Aurelio, Degen, Carragher, Agger, and Skrtel).
With that in mind it would be an idea to have 1 or 2 more defenders in the squad. Which leaves Rafa having to decide whether he should sign another defender or gamble on our youth players.
Sylvain Distin has often been linked with us, and at 31 he would provide us with quality experience (centre back and left back) at a very affordable price. But we also have a couple of gems in our youth ranks (Stephen Darby & Martin Kelly). As ever, it'll be interesting to see what Rafa decides...

Benitez should sign Distin and sell Degen, here is why :-
Degen is completely rubbish and should be sold or even let go. In his place should step Darby.
CB is a far more responsible position and Kelly is not ready. He really needs to go on loan and gain valuable experience before letting him play there.
Distin fulfills our need for quality cover at CB and it could be handy that he can play LB too.
Darby is solid at best and unlikely to do anyone, including himself, any favours by having to play a prolonged period in the team at this stage.
Distin makes sense.
Great shout guys, except pompey are asking 8m for him, which even with haggling would be 5m. Should've signed Finnan back! At least would've provided cover for Degen when he's injured (99% of the time)! As long as he promised to stop hitting kids in his car, he'd be welcomed back in my eyes.
Martin Kelly will be a star. He should be a regular squad member this season.

i think Mendy and Derby are both ready to make the step up, also mavinga is very promising. i watched the 3 of them last night against Cambridge their touch, passing and movement was excellent, all 3 were by far and above the rest of the players on pitch.Ayala also looks promising
Distin is a good idea but Darby wont be any nearer getting his game as some people are implying here. Benitez has never trusted him. Carra will get the nod if Johnson and Degen arent avail.
@Scouser - that's certainly a possibility but I'm hoping Darby will get quite a few first team games under his belt this season.

he supposedly wants 2million a year, certainly not worth that, but if he goes i'd like to be the first to thank him for his 2 fantastic goals against united and madrid. i dont think he is too bad really he must have something to be a regular in the italian side.
@kev oman - true, he had an excellent season in Serie A just before joining us and will probably do well again back there.
But his failure to adapt to LFC has allowed Insua to make a significant breakthrough, every cloud has a silver lining ;-)
im hoping we dont sign Distin he isnt good enough, were supposed to be moving forward, he certainly wouldnt push us in that direction.Were so close to winning the league again and becoming the best team in europe we need to buy a little better. i see Alonso has put in a transfer request.
@kev oman - Distin is more a backup player, not a first choice by any means, which is why I think he could make a good addition to the squad (for now)
