LFC has been given permission by Roma to discuss personal terms with Aquilani. Even though he's an extremely talented player, the physical nature of the Premiership could prove problematic for him.
Over the last few years, Aquilani has become very injury prone (48 league games in 3 seasons). I'm hoping this isn't the shape of things to come, as it would be a waste of his potential, and make him an expensive squad player.
It's not a forgone conclusion that he will sign for us. But if he does then I hope he can settle quickly and give us a creative edge in midfield.

I am thrilled that Liverpool has moved so quickly to sign another player. This never would have happened under Rick Parry.
He should make a good signing (if he agrees terms and passes his medical) and I hope he does well in Liverpool.
Shocking that Benitez would spend 20m to sign a player with such a bad injury history. This guy might be good but I can see him and Aurelio becoming good mates off the pitch.
shit player, why didn't he try for Villa. No way should go for Silva either, he's crap too!
this, when michael owen could've been bought on a free transfer?just as injury prone?im disgusted.
come on lads av a bit of faith in rafa! wen as e ever spent big money on people who wont make the cut??????????? in rafa i trust!
we're not strong enough to carry owen in the way United or Chelsea can. Aquilani by all accounts is quality but I fear the Liverpool orchestra will suffer without perhaps the best conductor in the world.
the kid's got hunger and passion and is very technically gifted plus Rafa known what he's doing.. i'm sure he'll do well. welcome to LFC!! support your players!!
Welcome to Anfield Alberto!
IN RAFA WE TRUST!
I think he'll be a great signing - especially at the money that's been mentioned. He's got 2 great feet and is very skilful. Roma rejected offers of more than 10M Euros more for him last season (I think Arsenal were after him last season if I remember correctly). If people check his injury history, you'll notice a trend of his injuries re-occurring after being brought back into action. This is either because he was brought back too soon, and / or there is something fundamentally wrong with Roma's training regime. You'll notice a lot of their players get injured.
I don't understand why some 'fans' a so quick to snipe at what Rafa is doing. It's embarrassing.
@john - I guess Owen doesn't fit in with what Rafa has in mind for the team...
As much as I trust Rafas judgement, I still feel there were better players out there for less money. However, looking at the squad, it would be hard to improve in terms of bringing in better quality squad players to replace the likes of Hyppia and Degen (who, in my mind, would struggle to get into a championship side, let alone a side challenging for the premiership..but that's a whole other thread). If Kuyt builds on another excellent season on the right flank and Babel takes off his coat and settles we could be in for a season to remember. To be honest, I think we already are.
didnt mean we should have bought owen, but he would have been a free gamble.weve just paid £20million for a player with a similar injury history?
Welcome Alberto!
Great signing, top quality player with bags of potential and at 25 still got alot to prove with liverpool and italy.
I have rated this lad since i 1st saw him at 21 playing for Roma in the champs league where he came on as a sub and had 2 long range efforts and ever since I've been impressed everytime i seen him play.
Has great passing ability, good pace and an outstanding shot.
He is not alonso but brings something different to our team which i think we need...becoz alonso didnt win us the league, did he?

@but-a-test - it's not so much the amount of money which bugs me. It was more his injury record. As long as he improves the team, that's all that really matters.
@john - I know you didn't mean we should have bought Owen. £20m seems like a big risk, but for Rafa to spend that kind of money on a player, surely he must believe he's a player who can really improve the team and fit in with his philosophy (I doubt Rafa rates Owen).
@Yaseen - I've only seen him on various youtube compilations, he looks great and will give us new options.
But good to hear from someone who has actually seen him play matches and also feels the guy is the real deal.
Im an AS Roma supporter and Im so sad that we've left such a great player, romano and romanista. You'll learn to love him. Ciao Alberto, good luck!
We have lost a big player in Xabi Alonso - a quarterback who dictated our play and tempo so why is Rafa paying £15M+ for a guy who has only played 16 times last year and is currently injured. Aquilani is a decent player but is it worth risking the money? Why not buy Steven Defour for £12M - lower price - fantastic passing and still young at 21.
And to all those who say that his injuries are behind him then look at another Rafa signing Degen (another player with a history of injury problems that Rafa signed).
i think people have very short memories, alonso being a great player he is was also prone to the odd injury. He seemed to be the master at sucking in a bad challenge on him, i remember plenty of challenges last season alone. Aquilani will be a fantastic buy for us, we have much better training regimes over here and i'm sure our back staff will look after him better to ensure he stays injury free.He also scores some great goals like Alonso and i think if we buy him we will be singing his name come the end of season when we lift the premier trophy. Also i think Lucas will step up this year as will babel.
@kev oman - good old Alonso, the red card maestro ;-)
I'm hoping all these rumours about the Roma training regime being responsible for his injuries are true, and especially that the lad can handle the Premiership... he looks a class player...
All those negavtive comments...f*ckers! Is this the way to support yer team, empty-heads? Look at how Torres has evolved physically, he takes the tackles very good now. I'm sure our great manager will fit him up quiet nicely so he won't be too injury prone, i'm so stoked the club have taken in a player from a club thats not so bad actually, Roma! I'm looking forward to see him play, welcome paisano :)
good luck alonso, see you in champions league final.sorry though we will be champs again
Paul I hope all is well and congrats
On Aquilani I think he will do great
But I just read the most disturbing news
Adam Hammil is on his way out!!
Now what on earth are they thinking about
Its the stupidest idea ever
The guy is a natural
He is simple englands best future central
Midfielder, he is going to be..
I really don't understand it..
@Isak - while many fans are concerned about his propensity to being injured, I'm sure most fans are also dying to see him play and want him to succeed with us.
@Tawfiq - yeah I heard about Hammill, shame really, I hoped he might get a shot at things but I guess Rafa didn't think he was good enough for LFC. Maybe there'll be a buy back clause, just in case...
I hope sooooooo that there is a buy back clause, the guy is our replacement for Alonso.. He did well in central midfielder position..
Any ways good news just received on my e-mail:
UEFA support fans ownership at Liverpool FC.
I'm in for it
Cheers
@Tawfiq - imagine just how cool it would be if enough fans signed up for it...
@kev osman: Alonso did invite tackles as he played deep and orchestrated things so he was a target. He also had 2 very mediocre or even poor seasons, until Rafa looked to sell him. I am a fan of Alonso but now he's gone we have to get on with things.
How you can say Aquilani will be a fantastic player is beyond me. We have forked out 20m on an injured player, talk about high risk. I also note that whilst Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in him before, they didn't come after him this time.
Lucas and Babel will step up? That's the problem...you're thinking these two clowns are good enough to land the title? Alonso couldn't even do it in 5 years, neither will these - Rafa needs to offload them ASAP.
