Musings on the Bolton match

Set piece defending is still a problem area for us as we continue to leak goals. This is because of certain players not pulling their weight and not because of zonal defending as the media would have you believe.

Notable performances were from Kyrgiakos who looked comfortable on his debut and of course Johnson who rescued us with another great performance. Lucas also had a good game and is starting to control play more often.

This win should help settle the nerves of many fans. The lads produced a high tempo game in the 2nd half and were unlucky not to score more than 3 goals, but they were also truly awful at times. I think the international break has arrived at the right time to break up our run of poor form.

YES, you are right. I was sitting and thinking if i was the only one greeting this international break welcome. It will give the boys a little break away from the last few hectic weeks and our manager to think deep about what to do to straighten things up...but i put my faith in Benitez' shrewdness and analytic mind!!!

Phew - that was too close and all cos of poor defending. The sending off changed everything and allowed us to win.
I have lost faith in Carra and hope Agger and Skrtel come back soon to keep him sidelined. Gerrard and Torres are improving and I loved their brilliant goals. Johnson could become just as big a player for us as those 2.
I hope this int. break makes a difference cos we got the big boys coming up soon and we cant afford anymore slip ups.

i never really knew anything about johnson before he arrived here... and to be honest didnt expect too much... but boy has he impressed... full of tricks and end product to boot...

@Scouserine - yes Carra's wane began last year and it wont be coming back in my opinion... he reached his peak a couple of years ago and that was that... Skrtel and Agger(if he doesnt become another Kewel) need to be the first choice pairing... and we eventually need another CB... Kyrgiakos may do for now but he also is not young and can only be viewed as a short term solution

@suley - I fear Agger is definitely just injury prone, I wouldnt label him another Kewell cos he has a much better mentality and work ethic.
Kyrgiakos looks good enough to be stand in for Hyypia until we can afford someone better.

@Isak - normally I'm not too fond of these international breaks, but figured I'd make an exception this time ;-)

@Scouserine - I was thinking last season was just a one off for Carra, it's now looking more like the shape of things to come from him. As long as Skrtel and Agger can string along a decent number of games, I won't mind at all.

@suley - Johnson has definitely exceeded my expectations, hugely impressed with the lad.

I agree with everyone that this international break is a welcome one but please lay off Carra. He hasnt become a bad player overnight and will be a certain starter for at least one more season before becoming a backup option.

@Larry - he hasn't become a bad player overnight, but like Suley said, the guy is past his peak.
