Surprise signing of Sotirios Kyrgiakos

Hands up if any of you really thought we would sign Sotirios Kyrgiakos to shore up our defense. Nah, I didn't think so. None of us saw it coming.

According to SkySports, a £2.5m fee has been agreed and it's just a question of a medical to be finalised. You can read this wikipedia article if you want to find out a little more about the big 30 year old.

Kyrgiakos will never be a world class defender (and he doesn't need to be), but I do hope he'll prove to be a solid enough option at the back.

Maybe Rafa's got something hidden in his sleeve with this one??? Never heard anything of the guy but i surely hope so... :-)

Greek players are generally physical and hardworking, and even though I've never heard of him previously, Kyrgiakos seems to fit that mold. He's a big man and I'm hoping his decade of experience including some Champions League play will help provide some consistency at the back for us. Welcome to Anfield, Sotirios.

Call me a cynic lads but to me this signing stinks of the yanks not giving Benitez any money.

I'd like him to do well and his experience could end up making the difference for us at the end of the season. So best of luck Kyrgiakos.

@Isak - I really hope that's exactly the case, and the optimist in me believes it to be true, but there's also a part of me that thinks there might be some truth to what Marcus said about lack of finance being made available.

@Brandon - yeah that's something which I've noticed since Euro 2004, he could have the right attributes to make decent signing for us.

heard this last night, he used to play for rangers and he wasn't much kop there, so hopefully he's sorted himself out now.Never saw this coming though.
Was hoping for a better signing.
I'm banking on a Torres hat trick tonight.

Exactly, usually people blame our manager for the hardships, but a large part of the guilt lies with the yanks...still, I hope to see some good of this guy from the Rafa's work. Ironically talking shite of the owners, i have to type "hicks" to be able to post my comment...eeire

@kev oman - i'll settle for 3 points no matter who scores ;-)

need to try and find a live feed for the match though, otherwise i'll have to contend myself with audio live and then video highlights later on :-(

@Isak - LOL - that's the best I've heard yet :-)

Good old google knows everything ;-)

On Match of the Day they said that Rafa was really keen on bringing Shawcross to Liverpool, but didn't have the finances available.

Shame I rate Shawcross.

excellent performance all round, especially the defence. Ayala and Johnson looked fantastic. gerrard was exceptional too so things looking up again. As i have said before we now have a better record than last season, results wise so it could still be our year.

@Azza - haven't seen much of Shawcross myself, but I prefer the idea of us signing an old defender who can play back up to Agger & Skrtel (who I hope will be the future fo our central defence) !

@kev oman - cheers again for that link, hate having to just listen to a live match !

@Paul - I see your point about the experienced player, but at 30 he hasn't obviously got a whole load more playing years ahead of him and it's not really much of an investment.

I would have prefered to splash out the extra £2.5mil on Shawcross seeing as he's young (only 21), and also provides an investment as I'm sure we'd eventually be able to sell him on for more if the situation arises.

@Azza - that's certainly fair enough, and I can appreciate that side of things.
