Lucas has done well, but Aquilani is coming

Lucas is maturing nicely and has been one of our better performers so far this season. Should he maintain that form, it's inevitable that he'll end up silencing many of his critics. I like him alot, but...

Rumour has it that Aquilani has been making good progress on his injury and has been pencilled in for a return on the 17th October (the week before our match with Man Utd). He's an exciting talent, and I'm dying to see him play for Liverpool, but at the same time...

Considering how well Lucas has been doing, I don't think Aquilani should just walk straight into the team. It'll be interesting to see how Rafa decides to balance the team once Aquilani is ready.

Who's Aguilani?

Benitez just announced that they havent set a date yet. I hope Aguilani will be good for us but he is going to be under huge pressure to perform as well as Alonso and Torres did in their first seasons.

@anonymous - yeah it probably would have helped if I spelt that right ;-) But it's corrected now, cheers.

@kopite - cheers for the link.

I am ver pleased at how lucas has been developin, he has shown a lot more consistency than a lot of players his age that are 22 and under, especially to be performing that well under the pressure of going for the title this year and last. I thought he was outstanding against stoke and esp man utd last season in the absence of Alonso, he will get better and fans need to get off his back. I do think the majority have come arounf however

Ofcourse Aquilani should walk straight into the team, Lucas is not good enough, its that simple. Babel is probably more frustrating as when he isnt playing well he looks as if he has never played football before (a la Djimi Traore) however when he is playing well (on those rare occassions) you can clearly see the boy has talen and does have potential... but when you consider Lucas he doesnt actually do anything that well, granted he doesnt always play that bad either but being mediocre (often poor) is hardly reason to celebrate. So if Aquilani is passed fit and is showing some form in training I can't see why he should'nt walk into the midfield position I mean what is the worst that could happen? He could play as averagely as Lucas? and if he really is struggling then sub him off but please for the love of god lets not start with Lucas because he will only go and put in a mediocre-to-poor performance and then Liverpool fans will say he did well just because he wasnt as hopeless as he was a season ago... The only really promising thing I remember him doing was a throughball to Gerrard I believe against Newcastle last season other than that I have seen absolutely nadda! Rant Over. Lucas hate mob out.

@RealityPeePool - I appreciate your point of view, I just think Lucas has been pretty good (each to their own).

I appreciate he has improved and as of late he has done a job for the team - I guess when he first signed he came with such a reputation I'm just hoping to see some of that potential... I heard he has put on a few kilo's through training and it seems as if this has done him some good maybe thats what it will take for him to really show his true potential, the Premiership is certainly a more demanding league... I hate to say this I really do but I think at the minute what we are really missing are some of those piercing diagonal balls from midfield to the wings that were so regularly supplied by a certain unamed Spaniard last season. I'm hoping Aurelio gets a good run as well as Agger when fit, as I think we could do with their distribution abilities from the back - We seem to be lacking in that department at the moment as neither Carragher or Skrtel are renowned passers of the ball.

On a positive note I think Mascherano's distribution has improved ten-fold.

RealityPeePool i'm struggling to decifer where your name originates from?

That has to rank as one of your worst ever posts.

It lacks content and direction.

Utter crap.

You can't even spel his name aguilani!! not the ferst time youve done it too.

Of course aquaman should walk in the team we signed him as the creative player :-P !!

you have just come to this conclusion that lucas is quite good after trawling the latest media $hit on newsnow LOL!!

@Twombly Red - dude, it's a simple little blog, there's no adverts, no delusions of grandeur, I'm not a writer, I don't pretend to have the level of insight of someone like Tomkins (he's one of a kind), like I've said before I started it as a simple little hobby, some people enjoy it, and those that don't aren't obligated to read it - that's the beauty of the internet....

@RedLucifer - on the contrary, I've been sticking up for Lucas for a very long time, and taking flak for it.

As for the spelling mistake, get over it, I admitted it and thanked the guy who pointed it out. Try spotting the irony of your comment in your own numerous basic spelling mistakes !!!

At least some of us, non-expert with no shrewd hard insight to the game, appreciate that someone tries to make a sensible blog :-)

aGuilani and Lucas behind Gerrard should make a nice little midfield...it seems, at least a little bit for me, that Mascherano plays with less passion since the Barcelona rumours...

I think Lucas will actually come good this yeason, he' been looking better and i think he's picked up new technique. If u ask the Toucan he could provide us with the midfield guile we've been lacking when Gerrard aint there.

One Bean.

Paul Heron said...

@Isak - Cheers dude, although to be fair, I do have plenty of 'off days' at this thing...

@toucan - I hope both Lucas and Aquilani make it this year as we can then keep bragging about having the best midfield in the world ;-)

Isak said...

Yea, but, you know! ?&¤k it, who doesn't :-)

Cheers, me mate! Good luck for all of us in this Liverpool world tomorrow afternoon

@Heron

The spelling mistakes in my post were ironic!

Lucas has improved but he is not good enough for Liverpool. A benchwarmer at most 'cos he is a lukewarm player (geddit?).

However I agree he should be a squad player and some of his throughballs are impressive. He did it again yesterday. But you get the impression Aqualani is on another stratosphere i.e Torres and Gerrard's superstar level so in answer to your "roundabout" poorly constructed argument ERGO Yes he should walk into the team.

Praises of improvement should be reserved for Yossi , he is the most improved player and has proven everyone including me wrong.

Nice to see Babel yesterday keeping it simple now some hope for him .....

As for Tomkins he is the most PLASTIC red of all and you're paying homage to him. 'nuff said.

Yea, I admit Lucas isn't as bad as he used to be. But he still isn't great. He doesn't really offer much in my opinion.

He doesn't offer enough going forward to be considered an attacking option (as Aquilani will be), nor does he provide a substantial defensive option (like Mascherano).

I really just see him as a fill in player.

@Azza - fair enough...
