Musings on the Burnley match

Despite a nervy opening several minutes from Liverpool, once the first goal went in, it was highly unlikely that Burnley were going to add us to their list of high profile scalps (Everton & Man Utd)...

Obviously Benayoun had an excellent game, topping off his high work rate and intelligent play, with a superb hat-trick. But that shouldn't overshadow the contribution of Gerrard who was immense and completely controlled the game, plus he had a hand in all 4 goals.

Carragher, Kuyt, Riera, Lucas and Insua, also deserve a mention for how well they played. If this game was anything to go by, I think we can forget about all those lazy performances of last month.

That had to be Benayouns best ever game for us, he could have 5 goals only for their keeper.

In my opinion Torres still looks like he's a few games away from full fitness. The rest of the lads all had excellent games. We are back.

Good result and performance. Job done nicely.

What I liked most was seeing how effectively Benayoun and Kuyt switch roles. It made it much harder to mark them. As soon as Mascherano or Aguilani are fit then Benayoun will be relegated to the wings again. Shame as he has more impact in the center.

@Marcus - I hope we're back, but it will take a few good games in a row to convince me. But the signs are very positive...

@Michelle - yeah but Gerrard and Torres make a far more effective partnership. It's good to know that Benayoun is capable of playing well in multiple positions. As Rafa says he gives the team options.

The atmosphere in Anfield was shite for such a fantastic performance. Its disappointing that the crowd only gets excited for the really big games.

i dont wanna sound negative and take anything away from a great victory... because it was a good victory and we did basically dominate after that first goal and played some great football... however before that first goal we just seemed kinda lost as usual... unable to pull any moves together that looked like unlocking their defence... and you also have to remember that burnley try to play an open game and not shut up shop like most of the lesser teams we play against... so in theory it is much easier to play against them... what are we going to do against those teams that do shut up shop? i kinda agree with what Reina said earlier in the week that we dont have enough players in the team that tip the balance... i hope im wrong though... really do...

Suley I have to disagree with you and Reina. We really have the players who can open up teams. Just look at Johnson, Benayoun, Gerrard, Torres. Also Insua, Kuyt and Agger have ability too. What we lack is squad depth and Aguilani is an unknown quantity.

Lots of people criticise Benitez for only signing a couple of players this summer but they give us a new dimension and if Torres stays fit this season I can see us seriously challenging for the title.

@suley - the impression I got was that there was a lack of confidence initially and the goal relaxed the nerves as they all gelled really well after that...

@scouserine - maybe one day we'll get that darn squad depth issue resolved ;-)

I really like reading you. I am in a Liverpool forum, I wish you could write there anything anytime (we don't have such smart people posting and it's really nice to read your blog).

I would agree with the comment about Torres not being match fit yet.
