The infamy of a red balloon

I certainly wouldn't want to blame that poor kid for throwing the beach ball on the pitch (his school mates might disagree). Sure it was a stupid thing to do, but it was hardly malicious either.

Instead there's a couple of other recurring themes to explain why Sunderland were able to beat us. Obviously the incompetence of the match officials who allowed the goal to stand didn't really help our cause.

But then again Liverpool didn't help themselves with yet another terrible performance. Time is running out for the lads to start performing and we badly need a run of good form to turn our fortunes around.

I've lost faith in our ability to win the title. I know it's only 9 games into the season, but come on, I mean 4 losses and we can't score in 3 games running :-(

Short of going on a mega streak of wins between now and christmas we can forget about the league and Benitez can go find himself another job.

@Marcus - look at it this way, if we win against Man Utd this weekend, we'll be only 4 points behind them with 28 games remaining. Also Chelsea aren't as invincible as the media would have you believe. But yeah I'm a little concerned...

I dont understand why our players dont look like they are motivated to win. Its like they really couldnt care less.

The squad has looked more and more disjointed in the last three matches and Benitez just can't seem to get the formation nailed down. Though most of us probably think it's an easy task to overcome, the 4-4-2 for the last ten minutes of the Sunderland match was dynamite.
Too little, too late seems to sum up the season so far. In terms of remedying that, I haven't got an opinion, but I don't think sacking Benitez is the way to bettering our poor form. If anything, that'd make the situation worse...

This should bury the myth of Jay Spearing. He is not good enough and even Lucas outshone him, This was a 0-0 draw.

The International Jinx has struck again. Gerrard and Torres were carrying knocks and should have not played. Mascherano was on the bench jetlagged.

Players like Agger just back and this was a contributing factor to the early "goal".

Luck is not on our side this season and we should concentrate on a cup run and aim for a top 4 place which is looking precarious now. Back to the drawing board rafa... Keep it simple.

@Simon - that sums it up pretty well...

@epiblast - I'm not too bothered about formations and stuff, it's more the lazy effort of certain players which bugs me. You're totally right that sacking Rafa would make a bad situation worse. Hopefully this 'bad spell' will pass soon enough.

We probably should aim more towards the Champions league now. At least make sure we get through the group stages at this point then judge after that if we should focus on the Premier or the Champions league.

Also, I think we should sign the beach ball. It offered more of a goal threat than most of our team.

Looks like we're going to fight for a European Qualification only, this year....christ it sucked to see loose to Lyon.....Lyon f@#k!

Paul Heron said...

@Isak - it's rendered me speechless :-(

Glad to see N'Gog and Kelly get the chance, though it was a gamble I suppose. Blasted injuries to Torres and Johnson....To hell with work tomorrow, all i wanna to is to drown my sorrows in whiskey and beer tonight!

Paul Heron said...

@Azza - if only Rafa had signed the beach ball ;-)

@Isak - you know if Man Utd beat us this weekend, I wouldn't be surprised to see Rafa let go...

Azza said...

Not. Good.

Struggling to see what's wrong here. This was the team which demolished Man U, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Villa, and numerous others. The only loss is Alonso.

Alonso can't have had THAT big an impact surely? I mean yeah he was good but we've gone from title contenders to struggling to get past the group stages of the Champions League.

We really can't fault Benitez though. If he had money available then we might have been able to do something.

My hopes rest on Aquilani. I know he is a really good player. Hopefully he can make a difference.

Gerrard is injured again though, and if he and Torres aren't fit by the United game... it's not going to be pretty. We have beaten Man U without them before though, and that was at a time when our form was dipping (the 2-1).

I'm not hopeful though.

You're right Azza, if only Rafa had been given the responsibility for the sporting side of things years ago, we probably would've had a very strong team by now. Man, the last thing i want to see is Rafa sacked...

Azza said...

I don't think he'll be sacked.

Gilette is looking to sell. If the club has no manager then the club's value decreases. Therefore I think it's more likely Benitez may quit.

I seriously hope that doesn't happen though. You only have to look at what happened to Valencia after Benitez left them.

Isak said...

Exactly, i think Rafa's the man to take us the premiership, but i hope he's resilience makes him stay and get the job done. And shut the trap on the critics.

idunno guys... i didnt even bother to read the match report... just seeing the scoreline was horrible enough... too painful... lets hope rafa doesnt leave... or get fired

The red balloon reminds me of the Cubs blaming their failure to make it to the world series on one overzealous fan who ruined a home run...this season is just depressing.

Paul Heron said...

@suley - there's only so many more losses which fans & the board will tolerate. EG if we lose against Utd and also Lyon next week... anything is possible :-(

@shinyshani - hopefully it's just a case of us getting all the bad form out of the way nice and early ;-)

Lets face it everyone we have not seen enough good displays from a Benitez Liverpool side since he took over.In fairness everything he has won at Liverpool has had a massive slice of luck involved. Liverpool have never been a club to sack a manager mid season even when they could afford to so he will probably survive what is looking very much like Liverpools worst season in a long long time..

Azza said...

Worst season in a long time? The season we won the Champions League wasn't too far similar from the position we're in now. We came 5th in the League that season. I didn't hear anyone calling for Benitez's head then?

Aquilani is looking good for someone who hasn't played football in like a year or something so there's hope there. Torres and Gerrard will be fit soon.

Also I can see the rest of the Big Four losing more games than they did last season too. We're what, 9 games in now? Every club has a bad patch. Ours is just happening at the start of the season.

As soon as we're through this bad spell and have a fully fit squad we'll be playing good football and you'll forget all about this bad patch.

If we lose Benitez it's all over in my opinion, so can we please all just sit tight, ride this out and then watch as this team bonds. We're not going to win the Prem this season, but we'll have another good go at it. We'll see where we're at around Christmas before we start demanding Benitez's head on a platter thank you very much.

@zza

The difference now is that Benitez had 5 years to get it right!

He has won nothing since his stupid goatee.

I am getting irate at Benitez apologists.

A lot of defeats could have been avoided if he adopted correct tactics. Jay Spearing clearly not good enough. Where is Plessis ?

Why loan out Nemeth when we dont have a 2nd striker? Torres was bound to get injured. makes our firesale of strikers baffling... Crouch Keane Bellamy... I could go on and on but you get my point.

He signed aquilani injured so no point in crying if hes not back??

The lack of basic common sense is down to Rafa.

Displaying Houllier-eqsue madness in his fireproofed role at Liverpool, £20m to sack him?

Why do I bother paying exorbitant prices for tickets then?? Us fans are being played for suckers.

The mess is partially Rafa's fault any fool can see that. The worrying thing is that it looks like he has lost the confidence of his players. dangerous times. I hope we get in the top 4 but not banking on it.

Isak said...

Don't blame Benitez alone for the bad results...what did you expect? That the championship would be ours in a matter of 2-3 years? Are you sane? It takes time to build a squad that win consistently every year...even more than five years. Take it f#@&ing easy. Besides, who could replace Benitez? Men like Redknapp??? Or Fergie??? Excuse my english but, twats, the lot of them...Benitez is the man for the job. Quit your looser-whining and use your energy on something else. Like maybe showing more support, if not for Benitez, then for the boys on the field so they may feel that we're for them every time. Bad form is not only managers and players fault...pressure from supporters doesn't always help matters!
