The second best thing for Liverpool FC

Well the writing had been on the wall for quite a while now, and sure enough Rafa Benitez was sacked has left LFC by 'mutual consent'. In theory this should be a positive thing, as new managers often bring a fresh impetus to clubs.

In practice though, we're still stuck with our illustrious owners, and thanks to a string of broken promises they made us, they're as much to blame for many of LFC's misfortunes. Fingers crossed they don't start selling off some of our star players in order to pay off their obscene debts.

Rafa gave us some great times, but his managerial reign had clearly run it's course and his leaving LFC is the second best thing for our club. The best thing would be for Hicks and Gillet to follow suit.

What we need now is to retain our best players and somehow attract a quality managerial candidate to save us join us.

Its like losing a good friend, I will miss Rafa, he always did his best for our club and was a true gentleman.
Farewell Rafa.

I felt worse when Houllier left. His sacking felt like losing a good friend for me. Rafa's sicking feels a bit strange. A bit like splitting up a relationship you knew wouldn't go any further.

His "best" wasn't good enough, should have been much earlier though.

@john toher - for a long time, I'd hoped for the best with Rafa, I mean he did give us a couple of title challenges, not to mention one of the greatest nights ever in Istanbul :-)

But his departure is probably for the best.

@everyone that is glad to see the back of Rafa....

I don't see how getting rid of Rafa (who by all reports looks like he's off to manage none other than the reigning European Champions) and replacing him with Roy Hodgson or Martin O'Neill can be "for the best"

Never mind the length of time and of course funds - which we don't have - that the new manager will require to build his own team.

Houllier had a 5-year plan to win the title as did Benitez - so how long for the next manager?

Neither of his predecessors succeeded but you can't seriously think that after one bad season and after the improvements that Benitez has made to the team and the investments being made in the youth system, that getting rid of Rafa now - and having to pay him 6 million for the privelege - will suddenly fix everything.

Notwithstanding all the background staff that will leave and have to be replaced, which will be an expensive and lengthy exercise.

How can this scenario seriously be considered to "be for the best"?

You don't know what you've got until it's gone and I for one am very, very sad to see Rafa go.

I realise that no-one is bigger than the club - not even Rafa - but surely he deserved to be treated with a little more dignity and respect than getting stabbed in the back the moment he went on holiday at the end of a tough season.

After the loyal service he gave us and the highs he delivered for which we all basked in, surely he deserved better from his employers?

The people at the top of our once great club are totally inept and are very quickly turning us into the next Newcastle.

I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that we are staring into the abyss.

@Jonny Black - fair enough, and I can respect much of what you're saying. I just believe that he had gotten to the stage whereby the players were no longer responding to him, and that's a real problem.

Like you say we look like turning into the next Newcastle, I really hope it doesn't turn out that way.

I just couldn't see Rafa being at the helm going into the next campaign.

The sooner the next manager is in, we can start to build again (with what funds, I don't know).

Too early to start projecting the future of the club...besides is World Cup time, grab a pint and avoid the rubbish rumors for one month.

But good luck to you Rafa and great to see you posting again Paul H.

Well said Johnny Black. What pisses me off more than the brain-dead media deciding Rafa was a useless coach and also telling us that Liverpool fans wanted him to go, is Liverpool fans (so-called) parroting the utter drivel from the likes of the Sun and the Mail. Or from smarmy ex-reds like Lawrenson. I am beyond angry with all of these and feeling murderous towards the yanks.

At the Inukshuk Foundation our goal is to fill in the gaps in community services and programs across Canada to help at risk youth complete their education.

Since reinstating our charity status in 2009 we've been hard at work to get our first initiative off the ground: creating Inukshuk Fields in Scarborough, Ontario. With your donations we can make our first project a solid success.

Well I am glad that he has gone. Just look what Benayoun had to say about him to get an idea of what the players thought of him.

His man management and communication skills were terrible, and his treatment of players such as Benayoun, Keane and Alonso was shameful.

He did boost our profile in Europe, but look how he has left the club. Between him, Hicks and Gillet they have left LFC in bad shape.

I think an English manager with the experience and man management skills that Roy Hodgson has we can look towards the future with a glimmer of hope at least.

Good riddance Benitez - will enjoy watching you drag Inter Milan down over the next few years.

Well after losing to the Toffees, Uncle Woy just hailed the performance of the season so far. Good to know currently Rafa is dragging Inter Milan down to 2nd from TOP whereas with Nice Roy he's lifted us to 2nd from BOTTOM!!!!!
