Over the years I've always thought Gerrard our most influential player and even if he wasn't injured much this season - I still would have preferred Alonso because he has been in such amazing form he has had more impact than Gerrard this season.

I forgot to add that Ryan Babel was the most disappointing player for the season. I was expecting massive things from him this year. Unfortunately he has been terrible, although with limited opportunities I guess.

For me it would be

4. Yossi Benayoun
5. Dirk Kuyt

Gerrard was inspirational all season and won many games off his own boot. Each year he seems to get better and better and he was ten times better than Giggs (what a joke). Alonso was solid all season and his passing is a delight to watch. I really hope all the rumours about him requesting a transfer are wrong, because he is so important to our team. I cant see why he would want to leave at the moment, considering how much the team has improved.

Torres was injured for half the year but still played some awesome football in patches. If he can stay on the park for most of next season I cannot see why he would not be able to bang in 30 goals in the league.

Yossi is definitely the most improved player this season. I was bagging him on this site earlier in the year, but his form since Christmas has been sensational. A special mention to Dirk Diggler, who I have really been harsh on a lot of times this year. He has finally won me over with his never say die attitude. He is not blessed with an abundance of skill, but he gets the job done on a consistent basis.

For me those 5 players stand out from the rest of the team this season.

Its a tough call between the two. Gerrard is definitely the more dynamic and rightly gets the headlines but I'd still go for Alonso personally. You notice the lack of fluency in our play almost immediately when Xabi is missing and theres no point having two dynamos like Gerrard and Torres up front unless theres someone further back to keep feeding them with really good passes.
